Keener didn&#8217;t play it because Mrs. Knorr was uncomfortable with the lyrics.<\/p>\n<p>She wasn&#8217;t alone. The song, written by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.allmusic.com\/artist\/ritchie-cordell-p66511\/biography\" target=\"_blank\">Ritchie Cordell<\/a>, author of some of the Shondell&#8217;s most successful hits, was witheld from the airwaves at a number of radio stations across the country. Although it&#8217;s pretty tame by today&#8217;s standards, &#8220;Too suggestive&#8221; was the common complaint in 1967.<\/p>\n<p>But &#8220;I Think We&#8217;re Alone Now&#8221; did find it&#8217;s way to Keener. In Reverse. Late one evening, producer Bo Gentry was experimenting with a tape recorder and played the song backwards. He liked what he heard, and so did the band. Cordell wrote some lyrics and before we knew it, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mirage_(song)\" target=\"_blank\">Mirage<\/a>&#8221; was at number eleven on Keener <a href=\"https:\/\/keener13.org\/guides\/670501W.html\" target=\"_blank\">the week of May 1st 1967<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ritchie Cordell went on to produce bubble gum hits for <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Crazy_Elephant\" target=\"_blank\">Crazy Elephant<\/a> an 1910 <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1910_Fruitgum_Company\" target=\"_blank\">Fruit Gum Company<\/a>. He had a ten year hiatus from the music business before returning to produce <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joan_jett\" target=\"_blank\">Joan Jett&#8217;s<\/a> &#8220;I Love Rock and Roll&#8221; album.<\/p>\n<p>He&#8217;s one of the few song writers to have one number one follow another.
