On January 4th, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0057755\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Hollywood Palace<\/a> made it&#8217;s debut and for the next six years, it was one of the most watched variety shows on television. Across 192 episodes, literally every major entertainer walked across it&#8217;s stage.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>ABC kept the venue, redressing and re-naming the former Jerry Lewis Theater as &#8220;The Hollywood Palace&#8221;. The program was one of the first to make the switch to color when the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Color_television\" target=\"_blank\">RCA NTSC\u00a0compatible\u00a0system<\/a> took off in 1965. And over the years, scores of stars hosted.\u00a0\u00a0<a title=\"Bing Crosby\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bing_Crosby\">Bing Crosby<\/a>\u00a0tested out his Christmas show format on the program and held the record for the most hosting appearances (31).\u00a0The off-screen announcer was\u00a0<a title=\"Dick Tufeld\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dick_Tufeld\">Dick Tufeld<\/a>, a voice we remember as that of the robot in the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/CBS\" target=\"_blank\">CBS <\/a>scifi classic\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lost_in_Space\" target=\"_blank\">Lost In Space<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Over the years the Palace was responsible for the first major television exposure for everyone from\u00a0\u00a0<a title=\"Rolling Stones\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rolling_Stones\">The Rolling Stones<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0<a title=\"The Jackson 5\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Jackson_5\">The Jackson 5<\/a>. <a title=\"The Beatles\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Beatles\">the Beatles<\/a>\u00a0supplied a first on the program;\u00a0the American television debut of the\u00a0<a title=\"Music video\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Music_video\">music videos<\/a>\u00a0for &#8220;<a title=\"Penny Lane\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Penny_Lane\">Penny Lane<\/a>&#8221; and &#8220;<a title=\"Strawberry Fields Forever\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Strawberry_Fields_Forever\">Strawberry Fields Forever<\/a>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>In the <a title=\"Tom Hanks\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tom_Hanks\">Tom Hanks<\/a>\u00a0film &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/That_Thing_You_Do!\" target=\"_blank\">That Thing You Do<\/a>&#8220;, the Wonders perform on &#8220;The Hollywood Television Showcase&#8221;, an homage to the Palace.<\/p>\n<p>While never a top ten performer, The Hollywood Palace did well enough in the ratings to survive until February 4, 1970. Der Bingle hosted the finale featuring best-of clips from the more than 700 performers who appeared on the program. The Hollywood Palace still exists today, as the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Avalon_Hollywood\" target=\"_blank\">Avalon Hollywood Nightclub<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>By 1966, color was becoming a staple in prime time.
