And when he was 20, Davy Jones was picked from a casting call of thousands to be part of a made-for-television rock band that became one of the most popular acts of the decade.<\/p>\n

After seeing the film \u00a0A Hard Day’s Night<\/a>,<\/em>\u00a0Bob Rafelson<\/a>and\u00a0Bert Schneider<\/a>\u00a0decided to create a TV show that would feature what they hoped would be America’s answer to the Beatles. <\/em>Their first choice was to sign John Sebastian’s\u00a0\u00a0Lovin’ Spoonful<\/a>, but that group already had a record contract.\u00a0So they ran an ad in \u00a0Daily Variety<\/a><\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0The Hollywood Reporter<\/a><\/em>\u00a0in the fall of 1965 to find their musicians.<\/p>\n

Americans\u00a0Micky Dolenz<\/a>,\u00a0Michael Nesmith<\/a>, and\u00a0Peter Tork<\/a>, and Brit\u00a0Davy Jones<\/a>\u00a0were ultimately hired and under the guidance of\u00a0Don Kirshner<\/a>, the Monkees<\/a> were born. The group had help from some of the best writers in the business including Tommy Boyce, Bobby Hart<\/a>,\u00a0Neil Diamond<\/a>\u00a0and the Brill Building team of\u00a0Gerry Goffin<\/a>,\u00a0Carole King<\/a>. They charted \u00a013 times on the WKNR Music Guide, with hits like “Last Train to Clarksville<\/a>“, “I’m A Believer<\/a>“, “(I’m Not Your) Steppin’ Stone<\/a>“, “Pleasant Valley Sunday<\/a>” and “Daydream Believer<\/a>“. They held down Keener Hit Number One five times.<\/p>\n

While each Monkee had his fan base, Davy was a particular favorite. With the British Invasion in full swing, his English accent and Beatle hair cut put him at the forefront. 38 years later,\u00a0\u00a0Yahoo Music<\/a><\/em>\u00a0named him “Number 1\u00a0teen idol<\/a>\u00a0of all time”.<\/p>\n

At the height of the Monkee’s popularity, Davy Jones talked with Bob Green <\/a>about life in the Hollywood spotlight.<\/p>\n

Jones continued to pursue a show business career after the Monkees broke up in 1971, touring with Dolenz, Boyce & Hart and various other side men. His stage and television credits include starring with\u00a0Dolenz in\u00a0Harry Nilsson<\/a>‘s play\u00a0The Point<\/em>\u00a0in London and appearances on,\u00a0The Brady Bunch<\/a><\/em>, My Two Dads<\/a><\/em>, Here Come the Brides<\/a><\/em>, and Love, American Style<\/a>. <\/em>He continued to record, releasing his last album in 2009.<\/p>\n

His last performance happened on\u00a0February 19th in Oklahoma, just ten days before he died in his sleep of a massive heart attack at age 66.<\/p>\n
