He was a star on the BBC&#8217;s Coronation Street at age 16. And when he was 20, Davy Jones was picked from a casting call of thousands to be part of a made-for-television rock band that became one of the most popular acts of the decade.<\/p>\n<p>After seeing the film \u00a0<em><a title=\"A Hard Day's Night (film)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/A_Hard_Day%27s_Night_(film)\">A Hard Day&#8217;s Night<\/a>,<\/em>\u00a0<a title=\"Bob Rafelson\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bob_Rafelson\">Bob Rafelson<\/a>and\u00a0<a title=\"Bert Schneider\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bert_Schneider\">Bert Schneider<\/a>\u00a0decided to create a TV show that would feature what they hoped would be America&#8217;s answer to the Beatles<em>. <\/em>Their first choice was to sign John Sebastian&#8217;s\u00a0\u00a0<a title=\"Lovin' Spoonful\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lovin%27_Spoonful\">Lovin&#8217; Spoonful<\/a>, but that group already had a record contract.\u00a0So they ran an ad in \u00a0<em><a title=\"Variety (magazine)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Variety_(magazine)\">Daily Variety<\/a><\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em><a title=\"The Hollywood Reporter\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Hollywood_Reporter\">The Hollywood Reporter<\/a><\/em>\u00a0in the fall of 1965 to find their musicians.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Americans\u00a0<a title=\"Micky Dolenz\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Micky_Dolenz\">Micky Dolenz<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Michael Nesmith\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Michael_Nesmith\">Michael Nesmith<\/a>, and\u00a0<a title=\"Peter Tork\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peter_Tork\">Peter Tork<\/a>, and Brit\u00a0<a title=\"Davy Jones (actor)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Davy_Jones_(actor)\">Davy Jones<\/a>\u00a0were ultimately hired and under the guidance of\u00a0<a title=\"Don Kirshner\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Don_Kirshner\">Don Kirshner<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Monkees\" target=\"_blank\">Monkees<\/a> were born. The group had help from some of the best writers in the business including <a title=\"Boyce and Hart\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Boyce_and_Hart\">Tommy Boyce, Bobby Hart<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Neil Diamond\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Neil_Diamond\">Neil Diamond<\/a>\u00a0and the Brill Building team of\u00a0<a title=\"Gerry Goffin\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gerry_Goffin\">Gerry Goffin<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Carole King\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carole_King\">Carole King<\/a>. They charted \u00a013 times on the WKNR Music Guide, with hits like &#8220;<a title=\"Last Train to Clarksville\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Last_Train_to_Clarksville\">Last Train to Clarksville<\/a>&#8220;, &#8220;<a title=\"I'm A Believer\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/I%27m_A_Believer\">I&#8217;m A Believer<\/a>&#8220;, &#8220;<a title=\"(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/(I%27m_Not_Your)_Steppin%27_Stone\">(I&#8217;m Not Your) Steppin&#8217; Stone<\/a>&#8220;, &#8220;<a title=\"Pleasant Valley Sunday\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pleasant_Valley_Sunday\">Pleasant Valley Sunday<\/a>&#8221; and &#8220;<a title=\"Daydream Believer\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Daydream_Believer\">Daydream Believer<\/a>&#8220;. They held down Keener Hit Number One five times.<\/p>\n<p>While each Monkee had his fan base, Davy was a particular favorite. With the British Invasion in full swing, his English accent and Beatle hair cut put him at the forefront. 38 years later,\u00a0\u00a0<em><a title=\"Yahoo Music\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yahoo_Music\">Yahoo Music<\/a><\/em>\u00a0named him &#8220;Number 1\u00a0<a title=\"Teen idol\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Teen_idol\">teen idol<\/a>\u00a0of all time&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>At the height of the Monkee&#8217;s popularity, <a href=\"https:\/\/keener13.org\/airchecks\/DaveyJones1967.mp3\" target=\"_blank\">Davy Jones talked with Bob Green <\/a>about life in the Hollywood spotlight.<\/p>\n<p>Jones continued to pursue a show business career after the Monkees broke up in 1971, touring with Dolenz, Boyce &amp; Hart and various other side men. His stage and television credits include starring with\u00a0Dolenz in\u00a0<a title=\"Harry Nilsson\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harry_Nilsson\">Harry Nilsson<\/a>&#8216;s play\u00a0<em>The Point<\/em>\u00a0in London and appearances on,\u00a0<em><a title=\"The Brady Bunch\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Brady_Bunch\">The Brady Bunch<\/a><\/em>, <em><a title=\"My Two Dads\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/My_Two_Dads\">My Two Dads<\/a><\/em>, <em><a title=\"Here Come the Brides\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Here_Come_the_Brides\">Here Come the Brides<\/a><\/em>, and <em><a title=\"Love, American Style\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Love,_American_Style\">Love, American Style<\/a>. <\/em>He continued to record, releasing his last album in 2009.<\/p>\n<p>His last performance happened on\u00a0February 19th in Oklahoma, just ten days before he died in his sleep of a massive heart attack at age 66.<\/p>\n<p>http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ehJNw-T3gpo<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>His first professional acting gig happened when he was eleven.
