Motown Records released &#8220;Please Mr. Postman&#8221; by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Marvelettes#Origins_and_initial_success\"><strong>The Marvelettes<\/strong><\/a> on the Tamla label.<\/p>\n<p>It was the group&#8217;s first release, and history was about to be made.<\/p>\n<p>The girls from Inkster High School, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/news\/gladys-horton-of-the-marvelettes-dies-at-66-20110127\"><strong>Gladys Horton<\/strong><\/a>, Katherine Anderson, Georgeanna Tillman and Wanda Young; were about to have a million-selling hit, and become the first<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Motown-The-Complete-No-Box\/dp\/B001H5HWSK\"><strong> Motown group to hit Number One<\/strong><\/a> on both the pop and r&amp;b charts.<\/p>\n<p>And perhaps most surprisingly, given Berry Gordy&#8217;s &#8220;Ford-inspired &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/bw\/articles\/2014-12-04\/motown-berry-gordys-assembly-line-made-songs-for-everybody\"><strong>assembly line approach<\/strong><\/a>&#8221; to hit-making; they did it with a song Gladys Horton found, and co-wrote!<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Marvelettes&#039; Gladys Horton-Please Mr. Postman(Live)\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bDmUVAp0aVQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>While The Marvelettes never again hit Number One, they had a string of hits, notably &#8220;Beechwood 4-5789&#8221;, &#8220;Playboy&#8221;, &#8220;Too Many Fish In The Sea&#8221;, &#8220;The Hunter Gets Captured By The Game&#8221; and the million-selling &#8220;Don&#8217;t Mess With Bill&#8221;. And &#8220;Please Mr. Postman&#8221;, recorded by The Beatles for their second album, went to Number One again in 1975, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=AHfddvbKb4w\"><strong>The Carpenter&#8217;s<\/strong> <\/a>very pop version.
