And it <em>wasn&#8217;t<\/em> The Jackson Five, who had <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thejacksons.com\/history\/the-jackson-5-1970\/\"><strong>four consecutive Number One&#8217;s<\/strong><\/a> that year.<\/p>\n<p>It was two of Detroit&#8217;s and Motown&#8217;s greatest artists: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edwinstarr.info\/\"><strong>Edwin Starr<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dianarossfanclub.net\/\"><strong>Diana Ross<\/strong><\/a>!<\/p>\n<p>Edwin was first, Number One for three weeks (8\/29-9\/12) with his scorching version of the Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong Vietnam-era protest song, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/War_%28Edwin_Starr_song%29\"><strong>War<\/strong><\/a>&#8220;. A song that was a much more mellow tune on The Temptations 1970 LP <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Psychedelic_Shack\"><strong>Psychedelic Shack<\/strong><\/a>, Edwin sang it with a fury\u00a0 that reflected the times like few records ever have.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Edwin Starr - WAR (live in TV Show)\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Cv5BYEOQYLo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Diana Ross picked up where Edwin left off, and also went to Number One for three weeks (9\/19-10\/3)! Ironically, Diana&#8217;s song was also a cover, of\u00a0 Ashford and Simpson&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ain't_No_Mountain_High_Enough\"><strong>Ain&#8217;t No Mountain High Enough<\/strong><\/a>&#8220;. With spoken word, soaring strings from the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and an amazing vocal, the song was a remarkable re-imagining of the original hit by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=DO8HAKKTaPc\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=DO8HAKKTaPc<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A Postscript. Motown Records had an amazing year in 1970, with a total of <em>eighteen<\/em> weeks at Number One! . The &#8220;big dog&#8221; was The J5&#8217;s 10 total weeks on the chart-including five weeks for &#8220;I&#8217;ll Be There&#8221;. Smokey and The Miracles&#8217; &#8220;Tears Of A Clown&#8221; was #1 for 2 weeks, a plus three weeks each for Edwin and Diana.<\/p>\n<p>Makes you wonder, like so many of the Funk Brothers (and others) have noted.\u00a0 What might have been, what could have been; if Berry Gordy not moved <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lamag.com\/culturefiles\/berry-gordys-gamble-by-the-sea\/\"><strong>Motown to Los Angeles<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Bob Berry Next time someone asks &#8220;what were the two Number One Songs of September, 1970?&#8221;, give &#8217;em the answer they least expect.
