In fact, it was during <em>pre-game<\/em> for Game 5 of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1968_World_Series\"><strong>1968 World Series<\/strong><\/a> with the Tigers and the St. Louis Cardinals.<\/p>\n<p>It was Jose Feliciano, appearing at the the personal invitation of Tiger icon <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/detroit\/story\/gage-five-years-later-we-all-still-miss-ernie-harwell-050415\"><strong>Ernie Harwell<\/strong><\/a>, singing his very <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/gameon\/2012\/10\/14\/jose-feliciano-star-spangled-banner-giants-cardinals-nlcs-guitar\/1633487\/\"><strong>personal interpretation<\/strong> <\/a>(and instantly controversial) of our National Anthem.<\/p>\n<p>And boy, did it hit the fan!<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"1968 World Series - National Anthem by Jos\u00e9 Feliciano\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/x1ZQawbo4Mo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Un-American&#8221; might have been<a href=\"http:\/\/the1968exhibit.org\/reflections\/singing-national-anthem-world-series-jose-feliciano\"><strong> the most PG thing<\/strong><\/a> that was said to describe his singing. And, yeah, it was different, but to my ears then and now, hardly disrespectful. Hardly the lows of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ls1YVhcLD2c\"><strong>Roseanne<\/strong><\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3kU9XwcOIfI\"><strong>Carl Lewis<\/strong><\/a> in later years.<\/p>\n<p>Jose&#8217;, who had been on top of the charts with his version of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedoors.com\/\"><strong>The Doors<\/strong><\/a>&#8216; &#8220;Light My Fire&#8221;; saw his career among English-speaking audiences fall apart in the aftermath, save for 1970&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Feliz_Navidad_%28Jos%C3%A9_Feliciano_album%29\"><strong>Feliz Navidad<\/strong><\/a>&#8220;. And, in a nice moment of closure, was cheered when he<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=OidQVyvbfwY\"><strong> reprised his performance at Comerica Park<\/strong> <\/a>in 2010, after Ernie Harwell&#8217;s death.<\/p>\n<p>BTW. There is one other &#8220;note&#8221; to this story. Ernie, who was also a songwriter (with &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.annarbor.com\/entertainment\/paul-keller-fondly-recalls-the-late-ernie-harwell\/\"><strong>lots of no-hitters<\/strong><\/a>&#8220;) had been put in charge of selecting the singers for each of the 3 home games at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ballparksofbaseball.com\/past\/TigerStadium.htm\"><strong>Tiger Stadium<\/strong><\/a>.
