It was Tom Dowd who captured the magic of some of the earliest hits in rock and roll, The Chords&#8217; &#8220;Sh-Boom&#8221; and &#8220;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Money_Honey_(Clyde_McPhatter_and_The_Drifters_song)\">Money Honey<\/a><\/strong>&#8221; by Clyde McFatter and The Drifter&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>And the hits (and important jazz recordings) just kept on comin&#8217;! <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.allmusic.com\/artist\/ray-charles-mn0000046861\">Ray Charles<\/a><\/strong>, Charlie Mingus, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Modern_Jazz_Quartet\">The Modern Jazz Quartet<\/a><\/strong>, LaVern Baker, and more. Including an all-time classic, #1 in 1959, #251 on the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/lists\/the-500-greatest-songs-of-all-time-20110407\">Rolling Stone&#8217;s 500 Greatest Songs<\/a><\/strong> list. Ladies and Gentlemen, Bobby Darin&#8217;s Grammy Award winning Record of the Year.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Bobby Darin - Mack the Knife (Live 1970)\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uiGFZUnJgqU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In the 60&#8217;s, Tom Dowd was there, as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ahmet_Ertegun\">Ahmet Ertegun<\/a><\/strong> pushed Atlantic into the stratosphere. There was The Drifters with &#8220;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Under_the_Boardwalk\">Under The Boardwalk<\/a><\/strong>&#8220;. He traveled to Memphis and later Muscle Shoals, to supervise the recordings by\u00a0Stax Records artists like Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett. He engineered <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Disraeli_Gears\">Disraeli Gears<\/a><\/strong> by Cream. He engineered and produced The (Young) Rascals&#8217; first album, and their first\u00a0Number One song, &#8220;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Good_Lovin%27\">Good Lovin&#8217;<\/a><\/strong>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>And, in 1967, Tom Dowd, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jerry_Wexler\">Jerry Wexler<\/a><\/strong> and &#8220;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Muscle_Shoals_Rhythm_Section\">The Swampers<\/a><\/strong>&#8221; from Muscle Shoals, Alabama\u00a0captured the brilliance of Carole King and Gerry Goffin&#8217;s lyrics, with the singular, superlative voice \u00a0of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lady_Soul\">Lady Soul<\/a><\/strong>, Aretha Franklin.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=keMeDEYx1Jw\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=keMeDEYx1Jw<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the 70&#8217;s, Tom Dowd alternated between engineering and producing, making sound come alive and helping to shape the recording visions of artists who became legends. He produced The Allman Brothers&#8221; debut album, and later, their masterpiece &#8220;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/At_Fillmore_East\">At Fillmore East<\/a><\/strong>&#8220;. He produced virtually the entire <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rod_Stewart_discography#Studio_albums\">Rod Stewart album\u00a0catalog<\/a><\/strong> of the 70&#8217;s, including Atlantic Crossing, A Night On The Town and Blondes Have More Fun.<\/p>\n<p>Almost done. \u00a0Tom Dowd, in fall of 1970, while working at Criteria Studios in Miami, introduced <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Layla_and_Other_Assorted_Love_Songs#Duane_Allman.27s_arrival\">Duane Allman to Eric Clapton<\/a><\/strong>, and the result was one of the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.allmusic.com\/album\/layla-and-other-assorted-love-songs-mw0000650067\">greatest recordings, and albums of all-time<\/a><\/strong>. He passed away in 2002.
