Mothers who developed <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rubella\">Rubella<\/a> while pregnant, many without knowing it, leading to an increase in birth defects. 5 years later, the number of children in need of special services due to hearing loss more than doubled in the Motor City. A vaccine was not developed until 1971 when\u00a0<a title=\"Maurice Hilleman\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maurice_Hilleman\">Maurice Hilleman<\/a>\u00a0invented the\u00a0<a title=\"MMR vaccine\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/MMR_vaccine\">MMR vaccine<\/a>\u00a0measles,\u00a0<a title=\"Mumps\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mumps\">mumps<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Rubella\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rubella\">rubella<\/a>\u00a0in a single shot followed by a booster.<\/em><sup id=\"cite_ref-PI_17-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-761\" src=\"https:\/\/keener13.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Screen-Shot-2019-01-29-at-10.33.23-PM-300x109.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"109\" \/>When Talk Radio was truly entertainment.<\/strong> A generation has now grown up listening to the echo chamber of political opinion that passes for &#8220;talk radio&#8221; these days. But once upon a time, talk radio was enlightening, entertaining and attracted loyal followers in every market where it aired.\u00a0<a title=\"Joe Pyne\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joe_Pyne\">Joe Pyne<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"John Nebel\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Nebel\">John Nebel<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Jean Shepherd\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jean_Shepherd\">Jean Shepherd<\/a>, and\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Jerry Williams (radio)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jerry_Williams_(radio)\">Jerry Williams<\/a>\u00a0were among the first to explore the medium in the 1950s.\u00a0<a title=\"KMOX\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/KMOX\">KMOX<\/a>, 1120 AM in\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"St. Louis, Missouri\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/St._Louis,_Missouri\">St. Louis, Missouri<\/a>, and\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"KABC radio\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/KABC_radio\">KABC<\/a>, 790 AM in\u00a0<a title=\"Los Angeles\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Los_Angeles\">Los Angeles<\/a>\u2014 both claim to be the first to adopt an all-<a title=\"Talk show\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Talk_show\">talk show<\/a>\u00a0format in 1960.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_753\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-753\" style=\"width: 196px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-753\" src=\"https:\/\/keener13.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Screen-Shot-2019-01-29-at-9.48.05-PM-300x182.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"196\" height=\"119\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-753\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Larry King on Mutual<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>If you grew up in Boston, you stayed up with WBZ&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Larry_Glick\">Larry Glick<\/a>. In Miami, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Larry_King\">Larry King<\/a>&#8216;s act attracted the attention of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mutual_Broadcasting_System\">Mutual Broadcasting System<\/a>\u00a0where his show was broadcast from coast to coast. Many of my generation remember late nights listening to Larry interview the nation&#8217;s most notable personalities, interspersed with personal stories\u00a0(Click the links to hear his classic\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=9tI9I7HIRAk\">Carvel Ice Cream<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/f6NePG45qSU\">Incorrigibles<\/a>\u00a0tales) and inside radio bits that those of us who were chasing broadcasting careers totally understood.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Today, that kind of talk proliferates in the podcast realm. The low cost of recording and deploying interviews has made this form of broadcasting accessible to anyone. Those who succeed over the long haul, follow much the same formula we loved in talk&#8217;s golden age from the 60s until the repeal of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/FCC_fairness_doctrine\">Fairness Doctrine<\/a> in 1987 allowed stations to stick to one side of the political street without impediment.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_756\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-756\" style=\"width: 178px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-756\" src=\"https:\/\/keener13.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/J._P._McCarthy_2_-_WJROneOfAKind-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"178\" height=\"133\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-756\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">WJR&#8217;s &#8211; J.P. McCarthey<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>One of the best talk hosts was Detroit radio personality <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/J._P._McCarthy\"><strong>J.P. McCarthy<\/strong>.<\/a>\u00a0He held court on <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/WJR\">WJR<\/a>&#8216;s Focus program for nearly three decades, beginning in 1964. Unlike Larry King, who famously said he never prepared for an interview, &#8220;so I can be in the same position as the listener,&#8221; J.P.s show prep was legendary. He was well read and had a encyclopedic memory. He was also one of the most admired and well liked personalities in the market. When he died, every station in the Detroit observed a moment of silence in his memory.<\/p>\n<p>J.P. was one of the best practitioners of the three keys to a great interview:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Prepare<\/strong> &#8211; Know as much about your guest as you can. Be well versed in current affairs.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Be A Kind Host<\/strong> &#8211; J.P.&#8217;s guests loved being interviewed by him because he could ask the toughest questions in a way that made them want to answer them.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The show is about the guest and the audience, not about you<\/strong> &#8211; J.P. had a powerful personality but Denis Waitley put it, guests always walked away feeling that, &#8220;I like me best when I&#8217;m with you.&#8221; McCarthey was there to ask the questions the audience might likely ask and the focus was always on the guest and never on himself.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Further down the page, we have a video clip of Larry King at the height of his powers on Mutual. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3HKT6Bf_nxI\">And here is an extended clip<\/a> showcasing J.P. in his element, interviewing\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/J._Allen_Hynek\">Dr. J. Allen Hynek<\/a> about U.F.O.&#8217;s. It&#8217;s a best practice course in conversation.<\/p>\n<p>Would today&#8217;s audiences, steeped in the intensity of social media freneticism, might find this kind of civil conversation boring? I bet not.
