How popular was it in Detroit and didn&#8217;t some other band also have a hit with Respect? <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keener13.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/aretha.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/keener13.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/aretha.jpeg\" alt=\"\" title=\"aretha\" width=\"126\" height=\"88\" style=\"float:left;margin:0 5px 0 0;\" \/><\/a>A: Detroit was always ahead of Billboard in recognizing R&#038;B talent and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aretha_Franklin\">Aretha Franklin<\/a> is a classic example. By 1967, CKLW was ascending in popularity in Motown. <\/p>\n<p>Comparing music guides in June of &#8217;67 you sense that the Bit 8&#8217;s music mix was a tad more soulful than what was playing on Keener. Aretha hit number one on CK the week of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ct30.com\/big30\/1967\/670509c.txt\">May 9th, 1967<\/a>, nearly a month before she peaked on the national charts, and held the top spot for 3 weeks. The song entered the WKNR Music Guide that same week. It had a 5 week run, with one of the biggest jumps in Keener history, a move from number 26 to&nbsp;number 5, during <a href=\"..\/guides\/670515W.html\">the week of May 15th<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Otis Redding had the first national success with <em>Respect<\/em>, climbing as high as number 35 on Billboard in 1965. But 9 months before Aretha&#8217;s version exploded on the scene, an Ann Arbor band, spent 6 weeks on the Keener charts with the same tune, topping out at number 6 the <a href=\"..\/guides\/660926W.html\">week of September 26th<\/a>, 1966. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keener13.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/rationals_robin_seymour.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/keener13.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/rationals_robin_seymour.jpg\" style=\"float:left;margin:0 5px 0 0;\" title=\"rationals_robin_seymour\" width=\"135\" height=\"80\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-581\" srcset=\"https:\/\/keener13.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/rationals_robin_seymour.jpg 409w, https:\/\/keener13.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/rationals_robin_seymour-300x177.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 135px) 100vw, 135px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/tinyurl.com\/2e59me\">The Rationals<\/a>, shown here during an appearance on Robin Seymour&#8217;s Swingin Time TV show,  recorded for <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cameo-Parkway_Records\">Cameo Parkway<\/a> records. The label that launched Bob Seger&#8217;s career was also home to Dee Dee Sharp, Eddie Holman and Chubby Checker. It was a perfect vehicle for Scott Morgan&#8217;s bluesy wail, and in the day, the Rationals sound was favorably compared to early Beatles and Rolling Stones recordings. The band <a href=\"..\/guides\/680125W.html\">charted again in 1968<\/a> with <em>I Need You<\/em> but never enjoyed Aretha&#8217;s success.
