This week’s edition of “Remembering a Forgotten Star” features prolific actress Irene Hervey<\/strong>, who died on December 20, 1998. She was born\u00a0Beulah Irene Herwick on \u00a0July 11, 1909. Under the stage name Irene Hervey, she was a ubiquitous face on screen,\u00a0appearing in more than fifty films and numerous television series over a career spanning five decades.<\/p>\n

Among her film credits:\u00a0\u00a0The Stranger’s Return<\/i>\u00a0(1933), with\u00a0Lionel Barrymore<\/a>,\u00a0The Count of Monte Cristo<\/a><\/i>\u00a0(1934), \u00a0Destry Rides Again<\/a><\/i>\u00a0(1939) opposite\u00a0Jimmy Stewart<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Marlene Dietrich<\/a>, \u00a0The House of Fear<\/a><\/i>\u00a0(1939), and the musical\u00a0The Boys from Syracuse<\/a><\/i>\u00a0(1940), in which she starred with her then-husband,\u00a0Allan Jones<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Who was Allan Jones? If you’ve seen A Night at the Opera<\/em><\/a>, you know him as the good-guy tenor managed by Chico Marx<\/a><\/em>, and romancing\u00a0Kitty Carlisle.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n

Hervey became a horror queen in the late 40s and 50s, appearing in \u00a0Night Monster<\/a><\/i>\u00a0(1942) opposite\u00a0Bela Lugosi<\/a>,\u00a0Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid<\/a><\/i>\u00a0(1948), and\u00a0A Cry in the Night<\/a><\/i>\u00a0(1956).<\/p>\n

She made a seamless transition to television appearing in dozens of programs, including Perry Mason<\/a><\/i>,\u00a0Honey West<\/a><\/i>, and\u00a0My Three Sons<\/a><\/i>, where she earned a\u00a0Primetime Emmy Award<\/a>\u00a0nomination for Outstanding Single Performance By An Actress In A Supporting Role. Later in her career, she had minor roles in the Goldie Hawn vehicle\u00a0Cactus Flower<\/a><\/i>\u00a0(1969) and\u00a0Clint Eastwood<\/a>‘s \u00a0Play Misty for Me<\/a><\/i>\u00a0(1971).<\/p>\n

She continued to work on television through the 70s, guesting on Dr. Kildare<\/a><\/i>, The Twilight Zone<\/a><\/i>, Burke’s Law<\/a><\/i>, Ironside<\/a><\/i>, The Mod Squad<\/a><\/i> and Charlie’s Angels<\/a><\/i>. Her last appearance was in the Animal House TV spin off, Delta House<\/a><\/i> in 1979.<\/p>\n

She was married to Jones from 1936 to 1957, giving birth to two children, one of whom was singer\u00a0Jack Jones<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Irene Hervey lived to age 89 and although not a household name, she’s one of those familiar faces you see on MeTV and say, “Hey, don’t I know that woman?”<\/p>\n
