  • 1952 – Pianist Johnnie Johnson hired 26-year-old Chuck Berry as a guitarist in his band. While playing evening gigs in the St. Louis area, Berry kept his day job as a hairdresser for the next three years.
  • 1962 – The “Monster Mash” rules the airwaves, becoming the most popular Halloween song of all time.
  • 1963 – Gerry and the Pacemakers were at No .1 on the U.K. singles chart with “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” the group’s third and final No. 1.
  • 1963 – The Beatles returned to London from Sweden and were greeted by hundreds of screaming fans and a mob of photographers and journalists. Ed Sullivan was at Heathrow as The Beatles arrived, and was struck by the sight of Beatlemania in full swing. He decided to look into getting this group to appear on his television program.

  • 1969 George Harrison’s “Something” is released by the Beatles as a single in UK, his first “A” side
  • 1970 – Led Zeppelin started a four week run at No. 1 on the U.S. album chart with Led Zeppelin III – the band’s second U.S. chart topper.
  • 1974 – Led Zeppelin held the U.K. launch for their new record label Swan Song in Kent, England. Ron Ely, best known for playing Tarzan in the 1960s NBC series, has died at 86. Ely portrayed the iconic character, further solidifying the image of Tarzan that was popularized by Disney.

Justin Timberlake postponed his Friday night concert at Little Caesars Arena due to bronchitis and laryngitis. The show has been rescheduled for February 20, 2025. Tickets will be honored at the new date, and refunds are available. Other shows affected include dates in Chicago, Grand Rapids, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Columbus.

Things to do in Detroit:

Palmer Park’s ScareFest is Saturday from 6-10pm. Kids and adults can experience the Zombie Trail of Terror, thrill rides, haunted dinosaurs, face painting and more. (Axios)

She began her career as a dancer, appearing in films like “Viva Las Vegas” before transitioning to comedic roles in movies like “Young Frankenstein” and “Tootsie” (for which she received an Oscar nomination). Hurricane Milton is rapidly intensifying. Upgraded from a tropical storm to a hurricane on Sunday, it’s now expected to hit Florida’s Gulf Coast as a Category 4 storm by Wednesday. Currently in the Gulf of Mexico, about 780 miles from Tampa, Milton has sustained winds of 85 mph but is forecast to reach 145 mph before landfall.

“Joker: Folie à Deux” tops the box office but may not have a happy ending. The sequel to the 2019 hit “Joker” opened to a muted $40 million, less than half of its predecessor’s debut. Just weeks ago, projections estimated a $70 million opening. Mixed reviews from its Venice Film Festival premiere, despite a 12-minute standing ovation, have left many wondering how the follow-up to an Oscar-winning, billion-dollar film with the same team fell short.

Keanu Reeves made his professional auto racing debut Saturday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, spinning out but avoiding collision midway through the race. He qualified 31st, ran as high as 21st, and finished 25th. Reeves, 60, is racing in the Toyota GR Cup to promote his graphic novel The Book of Elsewhere. His second race is on Sunday. Previously, Reeves won the 2009 Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach celebrity race.

Blockbuster is making a comeback through Free Blockbuster, a community-sharing movement offering free DVDs and VHS tapes. More dangerous weather for the storm ravaged Florida Gulf Coast.

Tropical Storm Milton is currently located 845 miles southwest of Tampa, Florida, with sustained winds of 50 miles per hour. The storm is moving east at 5 miles per hour and is expected to strengthen into a hurricane by tonight. The storm could bring 5 to 8 inches of rain to an already waterlogged Florida, with localized totals up to 12 inches, increasing the risk of flooding. Life-threatening rip currents are also expected along the Gulf Coast early next week.

New data indicates Detroit traffic has now surpassed pre-COVID levels. Traffic in the Detroit area has increased by 5.9%. It could be worse. Indianapolis and Columbus, increased by 13% and 16%, respectively.

The Tigers pulled off another magic act yesterday, scoring four runs in the eighth inning for a series-ending, 5-2 win over the Houston Astros. In our first playoff appearance since 2014, Detroit advanced to the American League Division Series against the Cleveland Guardians. Game 1 of the best-of-five series is Saturday at 1:08pm at Progressive Field on TBS.

GM CEO Mary Barra leads Fortune’s list of the 100 most powerful women in business, released yesterday. The list is based on “company size and health, their career path, influence beyond their organization, and how they wield power.”

Frosty

The Frosty Sno-Man Machine was named one of the 100 best toys in history by TIME magazine. It’s been in production for nearly 40 years, a remarkable feat in the kids’ product market. The toy is known for teaching children about the value of hard work, as it requires manual effort to use.
