Summer officially arrives in Detroit tonight as the Ford Fireworks return to the Detroit River for another spectacular display.
The 68th annual Ford Fireworks will light up the skyline on Monday, June 22, with the show scheduled to begin at approximately 10 p.m. The fireworks are expected to last about 24 minutes and will once again be launched over the Detroit River, creating one of the largest and most celebrated fireworks displays in North America.
If you’re planning to attend in person, preparation is the key to a great experience.
Best Places to Watch
Several public viewing locations will be available throughout downtown Detroit.
Hart Plaza and Spirit Plaza remain the most popular destinations for spectators seeking a close-up view of the show. Both locations open to the public at 2 p.m. and offer free admission. Visitors should arrive early, as capacity is limited and re-entry is not permitted once you leave. ?
A newer option is Erma Henderson Park, which also opens at 2 p.m. and provides another riverfront viewing opportunity. Admission is free, but space is limited. ?
Belle Isle is another favorite viewing spot. Vehicle access begins at 2 p.m., but only the first 3,000 vehicles will be allowed onto the island. After that limit is reached, pedestrians and bicyclists may still enter. Drivers should be aware that a Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry. (WDIV)
Expect Security Screening
All official viewing areas will operate as weapon-free zones. Guests should expect security screenings at entrances, and bags, backpacks, and coolers may be inspected. Once you leave an official viewing site, you should not expect to be readmitted. (City of Detroit)
Special Curfew for Minors
Detroit officials have approved a temporary curfew for unaccompanied minors during the event. The measure is intended to address public safety concerns associated with large gatherings and recent incidents involving unsupervised youth crowds. Minors age 17 and younger must be accompanied by an adult in designated areas during the fireworks event.
Getting Around Downtown
Heavy traffic and street closures are expected throughout the evening. Public transportation users should check service updates before traveling. SMART has announced detours beginning at 6 p.m., and riders heading downtown may need to transfer to the Detroit People Mover to complete their trips. (smartbus.org)
A Detroit Tradition
For generations, the Ford Fireworks have served as one of Detroit’s signature summer events, drawing hundreds of thousands of spectators to the riverfront and showcasing the unique partnership between Detroit and Windsor. Whether you’re watching from downtown, Belle Isle, a rooftop gathering, or across the river, tonight’s display promises another memorable start to summer in the Motor City. (en.wikipedia.org)
